If a French country style terrine sounds tempting but making it yourself is too much like hard work, then book a table at Makaron, Majeka House’s recently revamped restaurant.

Five-star boutique hotel Majeka House, in Stellenbosch, recently redesigned its restaurant, Makaron, and added a French-inspired bar and lounge, called M. At Makaron look out for Franschhoek-based potter David Walters’ exclusive collection of bespoke crockery which comes in various sizes, each bowl or plate slightly irregular in shape, and either embossed with an M or a colourful swirl to complement the restaurant’s stylish interior – lots of natural materials and textures in a palette of muted metallics and grey with accents of bright colour.
Makaron is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As an alternative to the bistro-style a la carte menu, a country harvest table (R150 a person) has been introduced for lunch. The emphasis is on authentic French country terrines, inspired by family recipes from Burgundy passed on by owner Karine Dequeker-Van der Merwe’s mother who recently spent time in Makaron’s kitchen sharing her knowledge with the staff. Lunch from the harvest table includes a choice of homemade terrines and breads, an individual salad incorporating fresh produce from the hotel’s vegetable garden, and a main course – typical offerings include steak with béarnaise sauce or salmon fishcakes.
